It's Time to Eliminate the Electoral College

Don't give up on this blog post yet – I'm not going to tell you why "my" candidate is better than the "other" candidate.  There's plenty of other folks on Facebook that are glad to get into a fight with you about who you should, or shouldn't, vote for.  I'd like to start a new fight about if it is time to get rid of the Electoral College.  This system made a TON of sense a loooooooong time ago, but with all the technology we have today there really is no reason why this should remain.

What's my beef?  It really comes down to the fact that I believe presidential candidates should be campaigning to ALL Americans, not just those in the swing states.  Tyler Lewis' Why We Should Abolish the Electoral College blog post is pretty well written and I encourage you to review it.  This simply is an insane system.  As I travel a good amount for work, I get to see what the campaigns are doing in different parts of the country. More importantly, I get to see what areas of the country the candidate realize are important to them; and conversely, the areas they can not worry about.  How frustrating is that?

It is not that I don't believe candidates should not be catering their messages to different parts of our country; it is just disenchanting when you live in a state where your vote simply does not matter.  In those states we simply get ignored by the candidate.  If we made our candidates sell themselves to the whole country, I know every individual in our great country would accept that their vote truly does matter – every single one of us would be in the final tally.  I cannot imagine a simpler way to make sure we all fully embrace our franchise.

So, my call to action is for all of us to start making this an important issue.  Leverage social media to raise this issue as I know how our country works.  We will only initiate change when we all demand it to be made.  If you like the "interesting" (aka circa 1700 technological) implementation of tallying votes then stay silent, but if you believe that eliminating the Electoral College in favor of a true popular vote then speak up.  We've had far too many tight races back to back to allow this system to continue past our current 2016 election cycle.

Are you with me?
