Hiking Up to Schloss Heidelberg

After finishing Canoeing Down Germany's Neckar River, I had my guide drop me off back at the base of the iconic Carl Theodor Old Bridge built in 1788 that is in so many local postcard pictures.

I took this picture on the bridge walking back into the old town through the bridge's gatehouse.

I strolled down the main street which was crowded with other tourists and headed up to the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit.  I then strolled into the Marketplatz where I took this picture of the courtyard and fountain, as well as the rear of the church.  You can see the top of the spire, but again, it looks like I did not take any front-facing pictures of this beautiful structure.  Check out the church's Wikipedia page for more details and images.

Great views looking up in the hills that tower over the old town.

Including its most notable icon; Schloss Heidelberg (aka Heidelberg Castle).

The time of the day was working against me as I wanted to ride up the staggered funicular railway to the top of the hill (which was about to close) instead of walking up the steep cobblestone path since I was quite tired from Canoeing Down Germany's Neckar River earlier in the day, but I soldiered on as I really did want to see the castle.

When I neared the top and was out of breath, there was a fork in the walkway when I was just below the castle.

The fork to the right took you to the castle courtyard, but was continuing at the same sharp pitch that was kicking my butt, so I opted to go to the left towards the garden area and the long walled overlook of the city that you see below.  To my surprise, this option ended up taking me even higher than if I just hammered to the castle directly.  Well, at least I got to the highest point of the hike and the rest would be downhill – phew!

The long hike was worth it as the views looking down on the city (you can see how tall the church spire is!), the bridge and the other side of the river were simply breathtaking!!

The walkway was a front-row seat to the castle, too.

I then went to check out the castle coming in from the back side.  I didn't realize how much this structure laid into ruins onto I got around to that side.

This looked so much more cool in person than it appears my pictures make it out to be.  I either need to get a better camera – or become a better photographer!  (wink)

There was also another great view of the old town below when beginning the walk back down the big hill.  So pretty!

My guide's blog considers Heidelberg a Contender for Germany's Most Beautiful City and I'm starting to think he just may be right!!
