Hearing the Sound of Music in Salzburg

The last full day of the Germany trip was actually a day trip to Austria; Salzburg to be exact. It is only a short 90 minute train ride from Munich. The first bit of the trip was just to walk around the old town. Gretchen and I started with crossing the Mozartsteg.

Yes, this is the same bridge from The Sound of Music.

More on The Sound of Music a bit later. One should remember that Salzburg is the home of Mozart.

That statue above was in one of the three main plazas. Plenty of opportunities for taking pictures of historic buildings.

The goal of this first part of the day is to get up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress which is easily visible from all around the old town.

We rode the funicular railway up to the top and wandered around for a while checking it all out.

The fortress is way up high and has 360 degrees of views.

Again, beautiful views.

We hustled down from the fortress and had a half hour stroll over to the start of The Sound of Music Tour!

After driving around old town and seeing many of the sights we had already seen on foot, we made our first stop; the Family von Trapp’s house on the lake.

Here is the view from the back of the house looking back to where we were standing.

Of course, the next stop was the gazebo

We loaded up the bus again for a drive into the Austrian countryside and had a quick scenic photo stop.

Then loaded back up for our final stop; Mondsee, the town where the wedding took place in The Sound of Music at the Mondsee Abbey.

This next pic from the movie reminds me of The Princess Bride’s wedding scene; Mawige… Mawige is what we brings us together today…

We then loaded up the bus and headed back to Salzburg where we ended the tour by wandering around the Mirabellgarten.

Even on the other side of the river we still had a good view of the fortress.

It was like we were in the movie, too!!

A beautiful city to be seen. After this, a train ride back to Munich and then a wake up to fly back home. What a fast, and fun, week to Germany and Austria.
