don't be in such a hurry to change your job (the suck continuum explained)

A colleague of mine and I were having the proverbial 'the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" discussion when comparing job responsibilities/opportunities when I introduced him to The Suck Continuum™.  This is my tried and tested model of what happens when one changes a job.  It basically goes like this.

  • You left your old job because it sucked
  • Before long you figure out that your current job sucks just a bit more
  • Eventually it forces you to take a new job which actually ends up sucking just a bit more than the last
  • And yes... the cycle repeats with each job continually sucking just a bit more than the last

The moral of the story?  Don't change jobs?  Of course not!  Just grow up and realize that this is just how the universe works and remember the other old proverb that "if it was fun then they wouldn't call it work".  (wink)
