Camping at Amicalola Falls State Park
In efforts to shore-up my Waterfalls page, I created this blog posting in June of 2015 that recounts events from April, 2011.
Like just about everyone who lives in the metro Atlanta area, I've been up to Amicalola Falls State Park a few times as it is such a great way to enjoy the beauty that surrounds Atlanta. The centerpiece, of course, is Amicalola Falls itself. This is a 729 foot tall tiered waterfall that is a marvel to see.
This waterfall is the one that made me want to start seeing as many of the beautiful falls that surround me as I can. It is also at this state park where I bought my copy of Waterfall Hikes of North Georgia which has been the guidebook that has taken me, and my family, on some great hikes to see as many of these Waterfalls as possible.
For this visit to the park & falls, my son, a friend of his, and I went "car camping" for the weekend.
We started at the bottom of the waterfalls on the very well crafted path. This far down offers lost of shade and the sound of water rolling over rocks. A great place to have a little fun and to take it all in.
Before long, and too many stairs, you start to make out the main falls.
Then, before your eyes, rich views open up and you can cross the waterfall on a foot bridge; well after you make it up 175 steps!
After you climb another 425 stairs, you can walk over what can't possibly be the source of this incredible waterfall. You simply can't see past that initial crest!
On the way back down you are greeted to all 600 stairs you painfully climbed on the way up.
We wondered around several of the trails which all offered tons of natural beauty and a rusty old pickup truck stuck in a tree.
Nothing more fun than squeezing inside a tree!
